6 Unique Houseplants to Bring Home
Bold statement incoming: unique houseplants are the best collection worth investing in. Let’s face it, your comic books, Spice Girls memorabilia, or Barbie dolls aren’t doing much to beautify your home and purify your air… Okay, well, maybe that one Spice Girls poster really adds that special something to the rec room, but for the most part, unique houseplants are where it’s at. When you buy unique and unusual houseplants for your home, it’s the perfect combo of art and nature all wrapped up into one. Plus, there are so many unique planters for houseplants with gorgeous motifs to choose from. If you want to spice up your life with a collection of fab, fresh houseplants, look no further than these seven unique specimens available here in Houston that are sure to become instant conversation pieces:
Dracaena Reflexa : (Commonly called Song of India) Dracaena Reflexa is a tropical native to countries near the Indian Ocean. It is widely grown as a houseplant because it requires very little maintenance, can grow in very low light, and doesn’t need a lot of water or pruning.g
Snake Plant: This houseplant collection is starting to sound a little like a zoo exhibit, but don’t worry, this one doesn’t resemble a snake quite enough to terrify you. While this houseplant is pretty unique and distinctive, you won’t be hard-pressed to find it. Its vertical, striped leaves are kind of edgy and add a little attitude to the atmosphere. It’s a pretty popular option because it’s one of the most easy unique houseplants to care for. It’s one of the few rare, low-light houseplants that thrive indoors with barely any sunlight at all. Plus, it doesn’t need much water, so you can set this guy up in the bathroom or the basement and can pretty much forget about it.
Ficus Elastica: The Rubber Plant (Ficus elastica) is a popular ornamental plant from the Ficus genus. In its natural habitat it grows very tall, however, the varieties grown indoors are a much more manageable height. For the indoor grower looking for a tree type plant species with attractive foliage which can grow from 1ft to over 8ft tall, this is an excellent choice.
Ficus Benjamina: There are a million and one different types of ficus in the world, but the ficus benjamina is a definite fave for Houston households. It has flexible trunks, and growers often twist and braid them as they develop, resulting in a pretty snazzy looking ornamental tree. It likes weekly watering and a sunny spot by the window, but you may find it starts to grow lopsided towards the light, so rotating the pot 90 degrees each time you water it will help it to grow straight and even.
Monstera: This uber-trendy houseplant earned the nickname “Swiss Cheese Plant” due to its big, hole-filled foliage. They’ll probably look pretty familiar, since their distinctive leaf shape has been popping up in fashion textiles and jewelry designs everywhere! Frequent watering and well-draining soil will keep your monstera happy, and a spot in the house with indirect sunlight should be just fine. Just take caution if you’ve got any pets that have a habit of munching on your plants, because the monstera could end up making your pooch pretty sick.
Burro’s Tail: This nifty succulent is one of our favorite hanging plants because its peculiar foliage dangles like a head full of dreadlocks. Each tail looks like a thick, rope-like cluster of small green marbles or tiny grapes, and they can reach up to 4 feet long at maturity. It produces little red flowers in the summer, but it’s definitely the funky dreadlock leaves that steal the show. It can get pretty heavy since the leaves are puffed up with so much moisture, so be sure you put it in a strong container with sturdy rope to suspend it from. You’ll only need to water it about once every two weeks, so it’s nice and low maintenance. Caution: hanging this plant in your kitchen may result in an overwhelming urge to turn up some Bob Marley and crack open a bottle of Appleton.
Having a collection of out-of-the-ordinary houseplants will totally transform your living space, brightening up the energy and ambience. Though, once you start building up your collection, it can get a little addicting, so don’t say we didn’t warn you! Visit Plants for All Seasons here in Houston, and we’ll help you find a perfectly peculiar plant — or six! — for you to take home.
